5 Simple Ways To Instantly Boost Your Mood

Whether it’s because you’ve had a crappy night’s sleep, got some bad news or simply woke up on the wrong side of the bed, we all have our down days from time to time. It’s totally normal! On those occasions, it’s tempting to drown your sorrows in greasy takeaway meals and a glass (or four) of pinot. And while that’s fine from time to time, it can often leave you feeling even worse than you did to begin with. Thankfully, there’s a healthier alternative! Next time you’re in need of a pick-me-up, why not try one of these science-approved hacks to instantly boost your mood?

    1. Soak up the sunshine

Also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin,’ vitamin D is essential for keeping your bones in tip top condition. But did you know that it’s also essential for your mental health? If you find you generally have a little extra pep in your step in summer, that’s probably why!

While you can get vitamin D through foods like fatty fish and supplementation, the best way to get your dose is by catching some rays. Next time you’re feeling a little blue, try getting out into the sun for 20 to 25 minutes. This is short enough that the sun exposure levels aren’t dangerous, but long enough to give you a serious mood boost!  Bonus points if you can kick off your shoes and come into direct contact with the earth (whether it’s grass or a sandy beach) — this is called ‘earthing’ and is also scientifically proven to improve your mood!

    2. Wear bright activewear

The colours you wear can have a huge impact on how you feel. Feeling low? Bright colours has been proven to release the feel-good hormone, dopamine, making you feel happier and more energetic. Stressed out? Cool shades like blue have been found to increase the calming hormone, oxytocin. And if you ask us, the best way to rock bright colours is in your activewear. Not only will it lift your spirits, it may actually motivate you to exercise — which, of course, has been proven to release endorphins and give you those upbeat vibes! You can check out our range of vibrant activewear here.

    3. Write in a gratitude journal

On those days where it feels like everything is going wrong (you forget your keys, you spill coffee all over yourself, you miss out on a job opportunity) it’s a great idea to remind yourself of all the awesome things you have going for you.   The simple act of practicing gratitude has been proven to give you an instant dopamine boost and the long-term benefits of doing it regularly are even better — improved relationships, life satisfaction, overall health and productivity, just to name a few! One of the simplest ways you can do this is by getting yourself a gorgeous gratitude journal. Each morning or night (or just whenever you need a pick-me-up) jot down three things you’re grateful for. It can be as small as the delicious coffee you had that morning or as big as having a family that cares about you.

    4. Tune out

Ever noticed how much better you feel when blast Adele (and sing along loudly) when you’re feeling sad? Or how you simply couldn’t be in a bad mood when Pharrell William’s ‘Happy’ came on? It’s no coincidence. Music can have an incredibly powerful influence on your mind. In neurological studies, scientists have witnessed how the brain literally lights up when you listen to music. The key is to match your playlist to how you want to feel. So, if you’re in need of some zen, pick a calming soundtrack. If you’re in a bit of a slump, pop on some upbeat music and dance around the house (preferably in your bright activewear!).There’s a playlist for pretty much any mood or occasion on Spotify, so the sky’s the limit!

    5. Practice yoga

Yoga is a bit of an overachiever when it comes to improving your mood. Not only does it give you the endorphin-boosting benefits of exercise, but it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping you cope with the stresses of everyday life. So, once you finish, you leave feeling uplifted and calm at the same time. Whether you head to a class or do a solo session at home, practicing yoga is by far one of the most effective ways to lift your mood.

Note: If you feel that what you’re experiencing is more than just ‘feeling blue’, it’s important to reach out for help. Beyond Blue have some great free resources to get you started.

Product Review: Your Island Supply Active Leggings

    Your Island Supply

Some girls like spending their money on expensive handbags, others like to splash out on jewellery. But personally, I like to spend my hard-earned cash on active wear (okaaaay…and food, coffee, makeup and wrap dresses, too.) Maybe it’s because cute workout gear genuinely motivates me to hit the gym, or because as a work-from-home freelancer, active wear is pretty much my full-time uniform. Whatever the reason, I can’t browse Stylerunner or walk into a Nike or Lululemon without wanting to buy ALL OF THE THINGS.

But lately, I’ve noticed my active wear drawer (and by that I mean, the messy pile in my wardrobe) has started to look a little like this: black, black, grey, black, grey again, possibly some navy if I’m feeling cray. While these neutral colours tend to be flattering, it was starting to feel a little…well…boring! My normal wardrobe (aka my 10 million wrap dresses) features a wide spectrum of colours, so why didn’t my active wear wardrobe? Was it because subconsciously, I was trying to shrink into the shadows in the very male-dominated weights area at my gym, rather than stand out? Probably.  But in any case, I decided it was time for a change. It was time to add some colour to my workout wardrobe.

I stumbled upon Aussie company Your Island Supply Active at the perfect time. They’re a Manly-based, Bali-inspired women’s yoga and active wear brand. Performance-driven, tropical luxe leggings are their thing, and they do it damn well. Just looking at their range, you literally feel like you’ve been transported to some far-flung, tropical island. I knew I had to give them a whirl — the only problem was picking just one pair from their collection! They’ve got everything from neon palm prints and pastel seashells to bright, flamingo print designs! Eventually, I settled on the Midnight Blossom Print from the Perform-Luxe range. because it reminded me of my awesome trip to Japan last October (and I love purple)

    The verdict

I have to be honest — I’ve had some bad experiences with bright, patterned leggings in the past, where they’re made my legs look kind of short and stumpy. I was also a little nervous that I’d ordered the wrong size when I first tried to get them on, as it took a little bit of effort. ‘Oh noooo, am I going to look like a stuffed sausage in these?’ I thought. But once I’d got them on, I was super impressed by 1) how flattering they were and 2) how smooth and comfy they felt. You can definitely tell that they’re performance-driven — they have a ‘compression’ feel to them, in that they’re really lightweight but supportive. I’ve worn these leggings to do a range of activities — from strength training and dance class to running — and have been really impressed by the range of movement I get in them. Oh yeah, and they don’t go see through when you squat! I checked. I also love that there’s a little pocket at the back where you can put your keys, bankcards or phone. Super handy!

All in all, I’m now obsessed with these Your Island Supply leggings and intend to stock up on more, so I continue adding more colour and patterns to my active wear collection! You can shop their range here and check out more photos below.

7 New Pairs Of Workout Tights For Your Activewear Wardrobe

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but we say leggings could give them a run for their money! Not only does wearing cute exercise gear make you so much more motivated to work out, but leggings are pretty much the comfiest thing you can wear (with the possible exception of trackies).

That said, workout tights aren’t quite so great when they’re faded with age and sagging in the bum. So, if yours are in need of an upgrade (or even if they’re not and you just want to treat yourself — we don’t judge!), here are 7 of our favourite new pairs of workout tights.

The best part? There’s something for everyone.

Your Island Supply Active Midnight Blossom Leggings

Let’s be honest — we could ALL use a little more colour in our activewear wardrobes. These vibrant leggings from new Aussie label Your Island Supply is the perfect place to start.

    Mother Driven Feature

Now we were the first to laugh at the now famous active wear viral video yet, it’s hard to deny the benefits of the uniform de jour of Mums everywhere.

C’mon, what’s not to love? Easy to wash, easy to dry, easy to wear, no ironing required and as at home in the gym as it is on the street or at Aldi – the benefits of lycra and spandex are as obvious as they are undeniable.

The only down side? You can only wear so much black or Lorna Jane (awkward when your entire Mother’s group are wearing the same leggings to the café). Enter new active wear brand Your Island Supply.

Launched in late 2017, the brand is created by a husband and wife team Duncan and Dhanya who live, eat and sleep the ethos of the brand. The couple are activated as – dividing their time between Noosa in Queensland and Manly in NSW, the surfing enthusiasts saw an opportunity to create tropical-inspired, functional active wear and have run with ball.

According to Dhanya,“I wanted to mix things up a bit. I see so many women wearing plain leggings when they train in and out of the gym. I personally wanted to wear colourful vibrant active wear that made me feel happy when I wear them and in turn motivates me to exercise.”

    And so it was.

The result are offerings that are multi-coloured, loud and tropical-luxe and range in length, including 7/8 length and ‘crop’. We’ve included a few of our favourites for your drooling pleasure.
